Big Changes Are Here: What the 2025–2030 CDR Competency Update Means for Your CPEUs

Starting July 1, 2025, the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) will implement major updates to the Essential Practice Competencies. These changes will impact how Registered Dietitians and Dietetic Technicians, Registered approach continuing education—and how they reflect on professional growth at the end of each recertification cycle.

Here’s a breakdown of what’s changing, and how to prepare.

What’s Changing

1. No More Selecting Spheres and Indicators for Every Activity

Previously, every CPEU activity required a designated sphere, competency, and performance indicator. As of July 1, 2025, that’s no longer the case.

Instead, practitioners will reflect on what they’ve learned at the end of their 5-year cycle—how their continuing education aligned with the competencies, and where they plan to focus in the future.

This streamlines the reporting process and reduces administrative burden while shifting the focus to meaningful learning and development.

2. Performance Indicators Have Been Revised and Simplified

The updated 2025–2030 framework features:

  • A shorter, more focused list of indicators

  • Clearer, more action-oriented language

  • A continued structure of 15 spheres, each with updated competencies and descriptions

The emphasis is now on how continuing education supports actual growth in practice, rather than assigning a code to every activity.

What This Means for You

  • You’ll still create a Learning Plan based on your goals—but you won’t need to match every CPEU to a specific competency when logging activities.

  • At the end of your cycle, you’ll evaluate how your education aligned with your plan and impacted your practice.

  • Choosing courses that clearly align with the revised framework will help you reflect accurately and confidently.

How to Prepare

  • Download and review the full 2025–2030 competencies from CDR:

  • Select courses that align with your goals and the areas of practice most relevant to your role.

  • Keep a short, ongoing reflection journal of key takeaways to support your end-of-cycle summary.
